The Warwickshire ring is a connected series of canals forming a circuit around the West Midlands area of the United Kingdom. The ring is formed from the Coventry Canal, the Oxford Canal, the Grand Union Canal, the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. It is a popular route with tourists due to its circular route and mixture of urban and rural landscapes.

The ring totals 106 miles and has 115 locks, although there are two alternative routes through the southern part of Birmingham - from Kingswood Junction one can travel via the Grand Union Canal to Aston Junction, or via the Stratford Canal (north) and Worcester Canal to Gas Street Basin in central Birmingham. The latter route is slightly longer and has more locks, but many consider it to be more scenic and interesting.

A carpet bag is a traveling bag made of carpet, commonly from an oriental rug, ranging in size from a small purse to a large duffel bag.

Such bags were popular in the United States and Europe during the 19th century. They are still made to this day, typically as women’s decorative small luggage and purses, although typically no longer out of old carpets.

The carpetbaggers of the Reconstruction era following the American Civil War were given their name from this type of luggage which they carried.

“The old-fashioned carpet bag (Fig. 1) is still unsurpassed by any, where rough wear is the principal thing to be studied. Such a bag, if constructed of good Brussels carpeting and unquestionable workmanship, will last a lifetime, provided always that a substantial frame is used.”

Carpet bags sometimes also served the dual use as a “railway rug”, a common item in the 19th century to keep warm in drafty and unheated rail-cars. The rug could either be opened as a blanket, or latched up on the sides as a dual purpose traveling bag. From Robert Louis Stevenson’s Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879): “… my railway-rug, which, being also in the form of a bag, made me a double castle for cold nights.”

Created by Eli Whitney’s ( creator of the cotton gin ) nephews, Eli Whitney and Philos Blake, a mortise lock (also mortice lock in British English) is one that requires a pocket - the mortise - to be cut into the door or piece of furniture into which the lock is to be fitted. In most parts of the world, mortise locks are generally found on older buildings constructed before the advent of bored cylindrical locks, but they have recently become more common in commercial and upmarket residential construction in the United States.

The parts included in the typical mortise lock installation are the lock body (the part installed inside the mortise cut-out in the door); the lock trim (which may be selected from any number of designs of doorknobs, levers, handle sets and pulls); a strike plate, or a box keep, which lines the hole in the frame into which the bolt fits; and the keyed mortise cylinder which operates the locking/unlocking function of the lock body. However, in the United Kingdom, and certain other countries, most mortise locks on dwellings do not use cylinders, but have lever tumbler mechanisms.

The installation of a mortise lock cannot generally be undertaken by the average homeowner since it is labor intensive and requires a working knowledge of basic woodworking tools and methods. Many installation specialists use a mortising jig which makes precise cutting of the pocket a simple operation, but the subsequent installation of the external trim can still prove problematic if the installer is inexperienced.

Although the installation of a mortise lock actually weakens the structure of the typical timber door, a mortise lock does offer more versatility than a bored cylindrical lock, both in external trim, and functionality. Whereas the latter mechanism lacks the architecture required for ornate and solid-cast knobs and levers, the mortise lock can accommodate a heavier return spring and a more solid internal mechanism, making their use possible. Furthermore, a mortise lock will typically accept a wide range of other manufacturers’ cylinders and accessories, allowing architectural conformity with lock hardware already on site.

Some of the most common manufacturers of mortise locks in the United States are Baldwin, Best, Corbin Russwin, Emtek, Falcon, Schlage, and Sargent. Also, many European manufacturers whose products had been restricted to “designer” installations have recently gained wider acceptance and use.

Discount locks Göta Canal

The Göta Canal () is a Swedish canal constructed in the early 19th century. The canal stretche from Gothenburg on the west coast, combined with the river Göta älv and the Trollhätte canal, through the large lakes Vänern and Vättern, in parallel with Motala ström, and to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea.

The architect was Baltzar von Platen, working to plans earlier developed at the request of the Swedish king by the Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford; he got permission to begin to work on April 11, 1810 and the canal was officially opened on September 26, 1832. Telford himself travelled to Sweden in 1810 to oversee some of the initial excavations on the project.

Built only decades before the advent of railways, the canal was soon outdated, and never upgraded. The canal is a tourist attraction, sometimes called Sveriges blå band (”Sweden’s Blue Ribbon”).

To support the building of the canal with mechanical works, a small engineering workshop was established in Motala called Motala Verkstad. This industry has sometimes been referred to as cradle of the Swedish engineering industry.

In fiction

Several movies depict the canal, most notably the 1981 comedy Göta Kanal, in which two competing yacht constructors race the canal in order to win a huge construction stock order. In 2006, Göta Kanal 2 was released.

A skeleton key is a key that has been filed in such a way as to bypass the security measures placed inside a warded lock. Today, this is also known as a bump key.

A Skeleteon Key can also be used as a key that opens every lock in a house

The term skeleton key is also often misused to describe ‘bit’ type keys.

This misnomer, perhaps, stemmed from its resemblance to a skeletal figure, with an open loop at its end distal to the lock into which it is inserted to open, and possessed of two or more teeth, projecting as perpendicular tusks off the slender shaft attached to the loop, with interstitial spaces approximating the width of each tooth, to engage the tumblers of the lock when inserted. The hole of it is most resemblant of a lion’s shape in certain medieval heraldry, and likely draws its origin from same or vice versa. The lock’s hole into which the skeleton key is inserted is fashioned in the shape of a circle at the top, with flared lines projecting down from it to form the sides of an isosceles triangle, the circle at the top then circumscribing the triangle at about one-third the vertical length of the two sides.

These keys were common in both cabinetry and door locks in early Colonial America and remained in common usage within the United States through the 1940’s, giving way after World War II to the more common house-key locks in use today, as manufactured by Schlage and others. It was uncommon to see skeleton keys and their locks formed of materials other than brass, although pewter was sometimes used as well. Most usually, skeleton keys today are associated with fine cabinetry, not other types of locks; they are insecure locks, not being capable of being ground to unique shapes to form a unique key pattern. Their common usage in earlier times therefore conveys the notion of less need for security than preoccupies the world today and since World War II, generally.

In computer science, multiple granularity locking (MGL), sometimes called the John Rayner locking method, is a locking method used in database management systems (DBMS) and relational databases.

In MGL, locks are set on objects that contain other objects. MGL exploits the hierarchical nature of the contains relationship. For example, a database may have files, which contain pages, which further contain records. This can be thought of as a tree of objects, where each node contains its children. A lock locks a node and its descendants.

Multiple granularity locking is usually used with Non-strict two-phase locking to guarantee serializability. MGL uses lock escalation to determine granularity lock on a node and its ancestors.

Lock Modes

In addition to shared (S) locks and exclusive (X) locks from other locking schemes, like Strict two-phase locking, MGL also uses intention shared and intention exclusive locks. IS locks conflict with X locks, while IX locks conflict with S and X locks. The null lock (NL) is compatible with everything.

To lock a node in S (or X), MGL has the transaction locks all of its ancestors with IS (or IX), so if a transaction locks a node in S (or X), no other transaction can access its ancestors in X (or S and X).

Luggage locks Windsor Locks, Connecticut Tornado

The Windsor Locks, Connecticut tornado struck on October 3 1979. The short-lived, but intense F4 tornado (see Fujita scale) caused 3 deaths, 500 injuries, and - with more than $300 million in property damage along an 11-mile path - ranks as one of the most expensively destructive tornadoes in American history.

The tornado touched down in the town of Poquonock, Connecticut, just north of Hartford, Connecticut in the Connecticut River valley. It traveled north through the town of Windsor Locks, Connecticut before dissipating in the town of Suffield, Connecticut, just south of the Massachusetts state line.

The path of the tornado crossed the northern portion of Bradley International Airport, and many vintage aircraft at the nearby New England Air Museum were damaged or destroyed by the storm.

Luggage locks Shiplake Lock

Shiplake Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames in the village of Shiplake in the county of Oxfordshire, England. It is owned and managed by the Environment Agency. It is just above the point where the River Loddon joins the Thames.

Reach above the lock

The river skirts Shiplake on the Oxfordshire bank and eventually passes into Sonning. On the way are four islands Phillimore Island, The Lynch, Hallmead Ait and Buck Ait. The Thames Path stays on the Oxfordshire bank to Sonning, where it crosses the bridge to the other side below Sonning Lock.
